Star and Cross Crochet Square

Lots of times I am inspired by quilts but this time I was inspired by Star and Cross tiles. Just love those! I hope you like my crochet interpretation!

Pattern Star and Cross crochet square

Materials: You can use any yarn with matching hooksize

I used Cosy fine by Durablyarn, 58% cotton, 42% polyacryl, 50gr/105m with a Clover Amour hook 4mm and my square measures 14x14cm.

Abbreviations (US terms):

RS right side

WS wrong side

beg beginning

st  stitch/stitches

slst slip stitch

ch chain

sc single crochet

hdc half double crochet

dc double crochet

tr treble crochet

dtr double treble crochet

tr2tog treble crochet 2 together:

*Yarn over the hook twice, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over the hook and pull up 1 loop. Yarn over the hook and pull through 2 of the loops on the hook. Yarn over the hook and pull through 2 of the loops on the hook, skip slst,* Repeat from * to *1 more time. You now have 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

1ch-sp 1chain-space

Instructions full motif:

make a magic ring or chain 3 and close with ss in first ch to form ring

Round 1: 2ch (=1 dc), 1dc in ring, 1ch, [2 dc in ring, 1ch] 7 x, close with slst in 2nd ch from beg

Round 2: 2ch (=1dc), 1dc in next st, (1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in 1ch-sp, *1dc in next 2 st, (1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in 1ch-sp, repeat from * 6 more times, close with slst in 2nd ch from beg

Round 3: 2ch (=1dc), 1dc in next 2 st, (1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in 1ch-sp, *1dc in next 4 st, (1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in 1ch-sp, repeat from * 6 more times, 1dc in next st, close with slst in 2nd ch from beg

Round 4: 4ch (=1tr plus ch), (1tr, 1dc) in next  st, 1hdc in next st, 1sc in next st, slst in 1ch-sp,

* 1sc in next st, 1hdc in next st, (1dc, 1tr) in next st, 1ch, (1tr, 1dc) in next st, 1hdc in next st, 1sc in next st, slst in 1ch-sp. repeat from * 6 more times,

1sc in next st, 1hdc in next st, 1dc in same st from beg, close with slst in 3rd ch from beg. Fasten off and weave in end.

Round 5: With slst join new color yarn in a tr on the left side of a point,

in same st *1sc, 1hdc in next st, 1dc in next st, tr2tog over next 3 st, tr in next 2 st, ( 2tr, 1dtr) in next st, 1 ch, skip 1ch-sp, (1dtr, 2tr) in next st, tr in next 2 st, tr2tog over next 3 st, 1dc in next st, 1hdc in next st, 1sc in next st, repeat from * 3 more times, close with slst in sc from beg.

NOTE: If you want to have different color “crosses” then change color after you made a corner section: 1sc, 1hdc in next st, 1d in next st, tr2tog over next 3 st, tr in next 2 st, ( 2tr, 1dtr) in next st, 1 ch, skip 1ch-sp, (1dtr, 2tr) in next st, tr in next 2 st, tr2tog over next 3 st, 1dc in next st, 1hdc in next st, 1sc, now join a new color in the next dtr, pull your new color through the loop and sc in the same st you just joined your new color in, follow the pattern again from here, tighten the loop( old color) and cut the yarn, leave a long end so you can later use it to sew your squares together.

Instructions Half motif:

make a magic ring or chain 3 and close with ss in first ch to form ring

Round 1: RS4ch,[2 dc in ring, 1ch] 3 x, 1dc in ring. Turn

Round 2: WS 3ch, [(1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in 1ch-sp, 1dc in next 2 st] 3x, (1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in 4th ch from beg round 1, 1dc in 3rd ch from beg round 1. Turn

Round 3: RS 3ch, 1dc in next st, [(1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in 1ch-sp, 1dc in next

4 st] 3x, (1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in 1ch-sp, 1dc in next st, 1dc in 3rd ch from beg round 2. Turn 

Round 4: WS 4ch, 1dc in same st, 1hdc in next st, 1sc in next st, slst in 1ch-sp, * 1sc in next st, 1hdc in next st, (1dc, 1tr) in next st, 1ch, (1tr, 1dc) in next st, 1hdc in next st, 1sc in next st, slst in 1ch-sp, repeat from * 2 more times, 1sc in next st, 1hdc in next st, (1dc, 1tr)  in 3rd ch from beg round 3. Fasten off and weave in end.

Round 5: RS With slst join new color yarn in tr from round 4, 5ch, 2 tr in same st, tr in next 2 st, tr2tog over next 3 st, 1dc in next st, 1hdc in next st, 1sc in next st, skip 1ch-sp, 1sc in next st, 1hdc in next st, 1d in next st, tr2tog over next 3 st, tr in next 2 st, ( 2tr, 1dtr) in next st, 1 ch, skip 1ch-sp, (1dtr, 2tr) in next st, tr in next 2 st, tr2tog over next 3 st, 1dc in next st, 1hdc in next st, 1sc in next st, skip 1ch-sp, 1sc in next st, 1hdc in next st, 1dc in next st, tr2tog over next 3 st, tr in next 2 st, ( 2tr, 1dtr) in 4th ch from beg round 4. Fasten off and weave in end.
